These are rough, dealer-level estimates—most manufacturers sell through a dealer network that can support you locally for years with service agreements and other options.

Refurbishing an existing pump room from sand bed filtration can be especially advantageous. Pump rooms built underground from the 1950s through the 2010s were often constructed around the filters they housed, with no way to replace them due to narrow stairwells or other access constraints. A regenerative media filter’s compact size can mitigate demolition costs entirely, effectively paying for the upgrade compared to the alternative.

That’s a hard claim to square with the record—the language was under discussion for over 12 years, including during my time at Neptune Benson (2013–2016, before its sale to Evoqua). For years, some manufacturers counted the outer surface of the filter media itself as effective surface area, rather than the bare tube—which fueled a “more media, bigger number” arms race depending on wet thickness. Neptune Benson’s filters were derated roughly 33% in March 2026 to correct for bare-surface-area reporting; fiberglass manufacturers, whose filtration tubes use a similar configuration, face the same 33% correction. Paddock, which packs the most media per square foot with smaller-diameter septums, tested with IAPMO to the current standard, raised their max filtration rate to 3.0 GPM/SF, and was derated 38% on the surface-area side.

Some manufacturers’ websites still list both “element uncoated surface area”—the current NSF-required standard—and an older “element coated surface area” figure that predates the 2023 update. The current standard requires labeling by uncoated surface area only; that’s not open to interpretation. The Model Aquatic Health Code (MAHC) sets the design filtration rate for pressure precoat filters at no more than 2 GPM per square foot of effective filter surface area, defined as the outside surface area of the media at the manufacturer’s recommended precoat thickness, consistent with NSF/ANSI 50 listing.

Something else worth addressing directly: a regional manager at a competing manufacturer suggested in a public interview that NSF’s role is murkier than it is—implying regulators don’t fully align with NSF testing. That framing undersells how the two connect. NSF isn’t a regulatory body—it’s a standards developer and third-party certifier. But state health inspectors and agencies like the FDA, EPA, and OSHA routinely adopt NSF standards directly into their codes, including the labeling requirements above. In practice, that means NSF/ANSI/CAN 50 compliance is what your state health inspector will check for in the pump room, regardless of NSF’s formal non-regulatory status.

Some designers go lower—0.6–1.0 GPM/SF—where local conditions limit how much water can be drained during a media change. Others design above 2.2 GPM/SF, which works fine as long as the filter is hydraulically designed and NSF/ANSI/CAN 50-certified for that rate.

There are two real players in fiberglass regenerative media filters: Aquify and Neptune Benson. As of this writing, Neptune Benson offers one small model rated to 1.4 GPM/SF at 214.2 SF. Aquify offers 16 models rated to 2.0 GPM/SF, from 75 to 1,600 SF, spanning 150–3,200 GPM at top speed. Aquify’s filters carry a 10-year warranty, include a large access hatch for regular cleaning, and—like Neptune Benson and Paddock—are subject to the same 2023 de-rating. If low cost, decreased performance, and a shortened warranty are okay for your facility, a fiberglass filter is an available option.

7. What Are Your Options With Lined Carbon Steel Commercial Regenerative Media Filter Manufacturers?

Neptune Benson is the only lined manufacturer of the old technology lined carbon steel option on the market today—the most NSF/ANSI/CAN 50-listed products in the category (48 models, 39–1,127 SF, approved to 3.0 GPM/SF)—with caveats worth weighing: potential liner issues, cleanability, a shorter warranty, a relatively large footprint for its filtration power, and a manufacturer-recommended max rate of 2.1 GPM/SF (just over 2,300 GPM total).

Commercial regenerative media filters for aquatics were first offered by Filtrex (now out of business) and the related Paddock brand, adapted from an older tramp-oil press candle filter patent. In the late 1990s/early 2000s, a filter from BRI Metalworks (Bridgeport, CT) was acquired by Neptune Benson in 2013 and modified for aquatic use, with a liner added to protect the carbon steel tank from pool water. Over the following 20 years, it became the industry standard, though it was also recently derated along with the rest of the category.

You can specify a filter with no accessories, or a partial or full package that may include:

  • Programmable controller
  • Air or electric valves for the precoat loop and effluent line
  • Vacuum transfer system for installing regenerative media

The biggest mistake: continuing to specify backwashed sand bed filtration, which wastes water, chemicals, heated/cooled water, and electricity—usually because the initial CapEX was never weighed against the long-term OpEX cost.

Another common mistake: treating all filters in the same class as equals. A 15-year warranty signals more manufacturer confidence than a 10-year warranty—the warranty length is the manufacturer telling you how much they’re willing to stand behind their own product.

One more: trusting Cryptosporidium removal claims without verification. Until recently, UV or ozone was the only proven way to address crypto in pool water. Be skeptical of any manufacturer claiming Cryptosporidium capture unless they can point to an NSF/ANSI/CAN 50 footnote specifically qualifying that claim—no class of sand bed filter (pressurized or vacuum) has passed NSF/ANSI/CAN 50 testing for Cryptosporidium capture.
